Birth is a journey unlike any other, filled with joy, pain, and profound transformation. My experiences with my first and second births illustrate the power of intuition, choice, and self-belief.
The First Birth: A Hospital Journey
My first pregnancy was a rollercoaster ride that began with severe hyperemesis. From just six weeks along, I found myself spending more time in the hospital than at home. The nausea was relentless, and I was hooked up to a PICC line, receiving nutrition directly into my heart. Picture me, a shell of my former self, losing weight while carrying a baby—talk about a strange twist on the whole "eating for two" idea!
Despite the challenges, I was determined to have a natural birth. I attended appointments, listened to my OB, and followed the conventional wisdom: "The doctors know best." When my doctor suggested induction at 40 weeks, I felt a wave of panic. Induction? No way! I wanted my body to do what it was made to do. So, I decided to wait it out, even when I hit the 42-week mark.
On the morning of my 42nd week, I felt a pop—my water had broken! Excited, I rushed to the hospital, only to face the weird and uncomfortable swabbing for amniotic fluid confirmation. Talk about a confidence shake!
The labor that followed was anything but what I had envisioned. Despite my best efforts, after 6.5 hours and little progress, I was given an ultimatum: continue with drugs or face a C-section. Defeated, I opted for the latter. It was a humbling experience, filled with the weight of disappointment and uncertainty. In hindsight, I knew I needed to reclaim my power for any future births.
The Second Birth: A Homebirth Transformation
Fast forward to my second pregnancy, and everything changed. Upon discovering I was pregnant with twins, I felt a mix of excitement and fear—twins? In my family? But this time, I chose a different path. I began interviewing midwives and birth centers, reaching out to a local doula who opened doors to incredible resources.
With my past experience in mind, I listened to my intuition. This time, I believed in my body and its capabilities. I surrounded myself with supportive people who empowered me. Cutting off negative influences from family who doubted my choices was tough, but necessary. I was done letting others dictate my journey.
My midwives from Midwife360 equipped me with the knowledge and tools I needed. We explored diet, herbs, and even attended classes on birth autonomy. I realized how unprepared I had been during my first pregnancy. I committed to meditation and positive affirmations, transforming my mindset into one of confidence and strength.
Then came the magical day—February 2, 2017. At 4 AM, I began to labor peacefully in my own home, surrounded by love and support. I felt empowered and liberated as I moved to my warm birth tub, the soft cushion beneath my knees welcoming me into a state of bliss.
As I labored, my fiancé was by my side, and my firstborn peeked in, curiosity in his eyes. I remember the water cascading over me, washing away my fears and doubts. It was pure ecstasy, an out-of-body experience. In that moment, I felt deeply connected to my body, my babies, and the universe. I can honestly say it was the most beautiful, transformative, and empowering moment of my life.
Why Consider a Homebirth?
Every pregnancy is unique, and while not everyone is a candidate for homebirth, those who are not considered high-risk should absolutely explore this option. A homebirth can be a profoundly liberating experience, filled with autonomy and respect for your body’s natural rhythms. As a doula with both hospital and homebirth experience, I can help guide you through the process, ensuring you feel empowered and supported every step of the way.
Let’s embrace the journey of birth together—whether at home or in a hospital—wherever you feel most safe and supported. Because ultimately, it’s about trusting yourself and your body’s wisdom.
